The Opportunity
Help shape the end-user virtual desktop experience that enables WSP people to work effectively across Canada and around the world. As the regional technical authority for Workplace VDI, you will guide the design, governance and continual improvement of Windows 11 virtual desktops across Citrix, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, cloud and on-premises desktop virtual machines, and NVIDIA vGPU. This role combines senior technical leadership, business demand support and operational governance. You will partner with Enterprise peers, regional IT, project teams and a Managed Service Provider to deliver consistent global practice while responding to regional priorities such as time-zone coverage, data residency, latency and business needs. The scope is end-user VDI, including persistent and non-persistent desktops; server and hypervisor infrastructure management is outside the role.
Your Impact
- Technical Leadership & Service Improvement
- Provide regional VDI technical subject matter expertise.
- Provide technical guidance on platform design, standards, roadmaps and strategic direction.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements that add business value and service capability.
- Technical Governance & Advisory
- Act as the regional technical escalation point for complex VDI issues, providing expert guidance during major incidents, problem investigations and service improvement initiatives.
- Support Change Advisory Board (CAB) and technical review activities through assessment of proposed platform changes, upgrades, image strategies and architectural impacts.
- Define and maintain regional VDI standards, reference architectures and technical documentation to ensure consistent delivery and support models across the service.
- VDI Demand, Onboarding & Capacity
- Support VDI demand raised by the business, working with business lines, project teams and regional IT to capture requirements and recommend the appropriate VDI solution.
- Plan and support capacity requirements for current and future VDI demand.
- Performance & Cost Optimisation
- Identify and drive cost optimisation, including autoscaling, right-sizing, reserved capacity and removal of unused or orphaned resources.
- Provide reporting and insights on service performance, capacity and consumption for the global VDI service owner and leadership.
- Security & Compliance
- Ensure VDI environments comply with enterprise security and regional standards.
- Support security governance activities, including audits, risk assessments and remediation programmes.
- Promote security-by-design principles across platform services and solutions.
- Continual Improvement
- Champion automation and standardisation initiatives to improve efficiency and scalability.
- Drive continual service improvement through operational metrics, stakeholder feedback and industry best practice.
The Skills That Set You Apart
- Hands-on experience, typically 7+ years, designing, operating or supporting enterprise end-user VDI environments; this is a virtual desktop role, not server virtualisation management.
- Deep technical knowledge of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops / Citrix DaaS.
- Strong technical expertise in Azure Virtual Desktop and supporting Azure services.
- Proven experience with Windows 11 Enterprise single-session and multi-session golden image management, FSLogix profile containers and virtual desktop optimisation.
- A clear understanding of the ITIL framework, including incident, problem, change and major incident management, with solid working knowledge of ServiceNow; an ITIL qualification is standard.
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Entra ID and hybrid identity and device management, including Entra hybrid join, Entra Connect / Cloud Sync, Conditional Access, and management of Windows 11 virtual desktops with Intune alongside Active Directory and Group Policy.
- Experience with VDI monitoring and user experience tools such as ControlUp or Azure Monitor.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, with the ability to explain technical options to non-technical stakeholders and influence across a global, multi-cultural organisation.
- Comfort working with a broader global team across multiple time zones.
- Experience working with Managed Service Providers, including service reviews, performance management, governance and operational oversight.
Desirable
- Industry certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty (AZ-140), Citrix CCP-V or CCE-V.
- Experience with NVIDIA vGPU and GPU-accelerated VDI for engineering, CAD / BIM or visualisation workloads, and with AVD management tooling.
- Experience with VDI migration or modernisation, such as on-premises to cloud or Windows 365.
- A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
