The successful candidate must have a PhD in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a related engineering discipline. They will be required to have an engineering license for practice (full) or teaching (limited) in Canada, or to apply for a Canadian engineering license within the first year of joining the University. Due to program accreditation requirements, all new faculty members are required to obtain the license within five years of initial appointment at the University of Waterloo, and maintain it during their employment at the University.

For this position, applicants must have a proven ability or excellent potential for outstanding teaching, have strong communication skills, and be committed to professional development and community building. The preferred candidate will have significant relevant geotechnical industry experience. Applicants must also have demonstrated an interest in engineering education pedagogy, and preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated exceptional teaching skills.

The expected teaching duties will include courses for students in our civil, environmental, geological, and architectural engineering programs, such as CIVE 353 – Geotechnical Engineering 1, AE 353 – Soil Mechanics and Foundations, CIVE 354 – Geotechnical Engineering 2, and CIVE 554 – Geotechnical Engineering 3, to name a few examples.

The salary range for the Assistant Professor rank is $100,000 to $140,000. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. In this case, significance of previous geotechnical industry experience will be a primary consideration.

The closing date for applications is December 15, 2026.

The CEE Department is one of the largest combined departments of civil, environmental, geological and architectural engineering in Canada. It is home to more than 45 faculty members, 200 graduate students, and 1,100 undergraduate students.
