Underknown Inc. is a Toronto-based, creator-led digital media company that builds, produces, and grows premium factual content brands for global audiences. Best known for our science, nature, history, and curiosity-driven programming, we operate more than 100 owned-and-operated video channels across YouTube, Facebook, and Snapchat, with shows like What If, How to Survive, Aperture, and Animalogic.
What If Tomorrow is our newly developed YouTube channel, spun off from Underknown’s flagship YouTube channel: What If. What If Tomorrow takes large, complicated geopolitical issues and distills them into hypotheticals that put the audience in the front seat. It’s grounded, informative, and focused on creating a more knowledgeable audience.
This is a creative production role where you will be responsible for managing, ideating, & producing this new channel into a fully realized Underknown show. You are responsible for pitching ideas, working with editors, writers & artists to bring those ideas to life in videos, monitoring how content performs after publishing, and building new formats & workflows to scale the channel.
The role requires a deep understanding of YouTube as a medium, including its unique language, audience psychology, and the mechanics of online attention. You must balance the art and science of production, creating content that is informed by data but without sacrificing creative quality.
Day-to-day, you will act as the hub for pre-production, ideation, packaging, production, and post-production tasks. This includes finding irresistible stories, framing them effectively, and ensuring the production team executes quickly at the highest quality. Many of these tasks will be enabled or automated by various AI tools and skills.
NOTE: This is a Hybrid Role from Toronto, ON. Applicants must be able to come into the office once a week, and be available for shoot days.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- You have 2 or more years of experience in YouTube content creation, video production, and digital media production.
- You keep up to date on news, geopolitics, and trending topics, and know how to craft that into a story.
- You know how to manage multiple different projects simultaneously, working on new episodes, building new formats, and building out social media strategies alongside other teams.
- You know how to use various AI production tools for ideation, research, pre-production, and production tasks.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Lead the What If Tomorrow channel, including editors, writers, host & artists to create one unified vision of videos.
- Experiment with new formats, including being on-camera.
- Lead the pre-production, production and post-production phases for each video, including ideation, packaging, researching, outlines, scripts, shooting, editing, etc.
- Solve creative and technical problems, overcome hurdles.
- Test new formats, including videos, social media posts, Short-Form content, and community engagement posts.
