About Heartland

Heartland Engineering (Alberta) Ltd. is a Sherwood Park-based multi-discipline engineering firm delivering practical, fit-for-purpose solutions across the oil and gas, petrochemical, power, municipal, and heavy industrial sectors. We work alongside long-standing clients, including major operators in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, on projects ranging from small brownfield modifications to greenfield facility expansions. Our engineers solve real problems on real sites with the support of a tight-knit, technically specialized team.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Junior to Intermediate Mechanical Piping Engineer to join our Sherwood Park office. You will support the design, stress analysis, and field execution of mechanical piping scopes, including pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and tanks. You will work directly with senior engineers, project managers, and clients, taking ownership of deliverables from concept through construction support. This hands-on technical role is suited to an engineer who wants to grow quickly, work on a varied project portfolio, and have a visible impact on client outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mechanical piping design: support multidisciplinary projects from conceptual design through commissioning and coordinate with civil, structural, and process teams.
  • Piping stress analysis: develop detailed models and complete stress analysis of piping systems using CAESAR II.
  • Deliverable preparation: create and review Engineering Work Packages, isometrics, plot plans, general arrangements, line designation tables, tie-point lists, and material take-offs.
  • Standards compliance: ensure designs comply with ASME B31.3, CSA Z662, and applicable client and site-specific standards.
  • Technical documentation and P&ID input: interpret drawings and provide input to P&ID development, including valve selection, piping classes, and equipment specifications.
  • Field engagement: travel to client sites for project scoping, as-built verification, and construction surveillance.
  • Project leadership: manage deliverables within established budgets and schedules while aligning work with contractual scopes and execution strategies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA and licensed to practise in Alberta. EIT candidates with imminent P.Eng. eligibility will be considered for a junior-level appointment.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of post-graduation engineering experience focused on heavy industrial projects in oil and gas, petrochemical, or power.
  • Hands-on experience with CAESAR II for piping stress analysis and AutoCAD.
  • Proven experience preparing Engineering Work Packages and associated technical deliverables.
  • Strong technical writing skills and the ability to produce clear calculation packages and reports.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's licence and willingness to travel to client sites in Alberta's Industrial Heartland and surrounding areas.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Assets Considered an Asset

  • Experience working in or around operating facilities in Alberta's Industrial Heartland.
  • Familiarity with regional client engineering specifications, including CNRL, Suncor, Shell, Pembina, and Dow.
  • Field experience with site walk-downs and construction support for equipment replacements.
  • Experience with 3D plant design coordination using SmartPlant, S3D, or E3D, plus Navisworks model reviews.
  • A self-starter mindset with strong verbal communication skills.

What Heartland Offers

  • Competitive salary commensurate with industry and experience level.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and wellness benefits.
  • Direct mentorship from senior P.Eng.s with decades of Alberta industrial experience.
