The Role
As a Full Stack Engineer on Scotiabank’s Data & AI Technology team, you will provide senior technical leadership in designing, building, and scaling enterprise data management capabilities across metadata management, data discovery, governance, lineage, quality, security, and platform integration. You will develop secure, resilient user experiences, APIs, services, and automation that enable teams across the organization to find, understand, trust, govern, and use data effectively. Working across engineering, product, architecture, security, and governance teams, you will shape solution architecture, establish engineering standards, mentor engineers, manage technical risk, and influence the evolution of the enterprise data platform.
Is this role right for you? In this role you will:
- Own the technical design and delivery of scalable enterprise data management capabilities, including metadata, discovery, lineage, data quality, policy enforcement, access controls, and platform integrations.
- Lead the design and implementation of secure, accessible, and responsive web applications, reusable user‑interface components, RESTful APIs, microservices, event-driven integrations, and data-processing services.
- Provide technical direction across squads by leading design reviews, resolving complex engineering challenges, evaluating architectural trade‑offs, and managing dependencies and technical risk.
- Establish and promote engineering excellence through automated testing, secure coding, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, performance engineering, production readiness, and operational support practices.
- Partner with product managers, data governance, architecture, cybersecurity, and platform teams to translate enterprise data management outcomes into pragmatic technical roadmaps and deliverable solutions.
- Mentor engineers, raise the technical capability of the broader team, provide actionable feedback, and foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Communicate complex technical decisions clearly to engineering and non‑technical stakeholders, building alignment around delivery priorities, risks, and enterprise-scale outcomes.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in designing and delivering enterprise-scale, production-grade full‑stack applications and distributed systems in complex technology environments.
- Advanced Java development skills, including experience with Spring Boot or comparable frameworks, domain‑driven design, common design patterns, concurrency, performance optimization, and automated testing.
- Strong frontend engineering experience with React or Angular, TypeScript, modern state‑management and component patterns, responsive design, accessibility, and frontend testing.
- Demonstrated experience designing secure RESTful APIs, microservices, event‑driven services, and integration patterns, with sound knowledge of authentication, authorization, versioning, resiliency, and API lifecycle management.
- Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP, containerized workloads, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code such as Terraform, and production observability using logs, metrics, traces, and alerting.
- Proven ability to lead technical decisions, influence across teams, mentor engineers, and communicate architecture, trade‑offs, delivery risks, and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Strong ownership, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a pragmatic approach to balancing correctness, security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and customer outcomes.
