About the Role
The Controller is responsible for leading the company’s accounting operations and delivering accurate, timely financial reporting across multiple construction projects. This role will oversee job costing, WIP reporting, AP/AR, payroll accounting, month-end close, and cash flow forecasting—while strengthening internal controls and supporting senior leadership with clear financial insights to drive project and business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Own full-cycle accounting operations including month-end close, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Manage construction job costing: maintain cost codes, monitor budgets vs. actuals, analyze variances, and ensure clean cost allocation by project.
- Prepare and present WIP reporting (percent complete), project margin tracking, and forecast-to-complete reporting for leadership.
- Oversee AP/AR including vendor management, subcontractor payments, lien holdbacks, progress billings, collections, and cash application.
- Support project teams with financial tracking for change orders, POs, contracts, and commitments.
- Lead cash flow forecasting and working capital management; monitor credit facilities and banking requirements.
- Ensure compliance with CRA filings and reporting (HST, payroll remittances, T4/T5, etc.) and coordinate year-end with external accountants.
- Develop and improve accounting policies, internal controls, and processes to support growth and reduce risk.
- Manage and mentor accounting staff (as applicable) and coordinate with project managers, estimators, and operations.
Qualifications & Experience
- 5+ years progressive accounting experience, with construction/building/development experience strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of job costing, WIP, holdbacks, progress billing, and subcontractor accounting.
- Experience with accounting/ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Jonas, Viewpoint, QuickBooks + costing tools) and strong Excel skills.
- Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and confident communicating with operations and leadership.
