The postholder will be employed by OUHFT. It is expected that they will adhere to the local policies of all trusts when delivering services there; working collaboratively with colleagues across the Network to develop effective and efficient patient pathways. The Thames Valley Vascular Network (TVVN) provides care to a population of just over 2.2 million across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The Network consists of three NHS trusts: Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT), Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT), and Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBHFT).

The trusts work collaboratively to centralise elective major arterial surgery and non-elective surgery at John Radcliffe Hospital (OUHFT) whilst maintaining day case surgery, outpatient appointments at local hospitals in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire as well as some local inpatient treatment and review where appropriate.

The postholder’s duties will be in the John Radcliffe Hospital and cover for the Thames Valley Vascular Network hospitals. The postholder will be expected to cover the full range of elective and emergency endovascular and open surgery in Oxford. Rarely this may involve the management of paediatric cases. They will work within a team which covers Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire patients and will be expected to provide cross cover for leave. The department runs a Consultant of the Week arrangement for the on-call cover and the responsibility for all in-patients rests with the Consultant of the week when the post holder is off site.

All aspects of vascular surgery are undertaken by the vascular surgical department with most common procedures:

  • Aortic disorders: Open and endovascular procedures undertaken including complex aortic repairs. Close collaboration with cardiac service to offer a comprehensive service.
  • Carotid endarterectomy: One of the busiest centres for surgical treatment of carotid disease including carotid stenting.
  • Complex management of peripheral vascular disease: Including diabetic foot disorder – strong link with the Oxford Bone infection unit and OCDEM to offer a comprehensive diabetic foot service.
  • Management of Venous disease: We provide a tertiary deep venous service with a robust MDT and treatment, using primarily endovascular techniques, for deep venous disorders.

OUHFT is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students and training junior doctors. It is expected that research will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The postholder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Mentoring will be provided by a senior member of the department for the first year of working and for any additional needs beyond this time. The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. Both Trusts commit to support the postholder through the revalidation process.

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

The outline job plan comprises a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. This consists of 8.5 direct clinical care PAs and 1.5 supporting professional activity PAs. As this job plan has less than 2.5 SPAs there is a commitment by both Trusts to review the job plan within the first 6-12 months.
