The Position

Mission Critical Engineers is seeking an Electrical Commissioning Associate to support the field execution of commissioning activities on complex data centre and mission-critical projects.

This is a site-based technical role supporting projects in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Electrical Commissioning Associate will work alongside the Lead Data Centre Commissioning Engineer & Project Manager and the commissioning team during system startup, test preparation, functional testing, integrated systems testing, and turnover.

The role requires a solid understanding of electrical systems, critical power infrastructure, controls, and system interdependencies, together with strong attention to detail, technical documentation skills, and the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, OEMs, engineers, and project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support and actively participate in L1-L5 commissioning activities, including factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, installation verification, pre-functional testing, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing.
  • Participate in field verification, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation of critical electrical systems.
  • Take field measurements with electrical test instruments, including power-quality analysers, infrared thermography cameras, insulation-resistance testers, and digital multimeters, and record the results accurately.
  • Assist with commissioning utility service, medium- and low-voltage distribution, switchgear, transformers, generators, ATS/STS, UPS systems, battery systems, PDUs, grounding, protection, EPMS, and associated controls.
  • Support verification of electrical-system redundancy, control sequences, alarms, interlocks, failover, recovery, maintainability, and response to abnormal operating conditions.
  • Review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, submittals, equipment documentation, test procedures, and sequences of operation.
  • Conduct site inspections and verify installation, test readiness, and completion of pre-functional requirements.
  • Assist with the development, review, and execution of test plans, test scripts, checklists, test matrices, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support testing of BMS/EPMS points, alarms, monitoring, interlocks, automatic transfer sequences, protection systems, and system response.
  • Attend commissioning, test-readiness, and technical coordination meetings with clients, contractors, OEMs, consulting engineers, and MCE personnel.
  • Coordinate with contractors and OEM representatives during equipment startup, testing, issue resolution, and documentation review.
  • Maintain accurate test records, site observations, deficiency logs, meeting minutes, and project-status updates.
  • Support test-day logistics, including site access, equipment availability, safety controls, temporary loads, required documentation, and OEM attendance.
  • Assist in tracking deficiencies, verifying corrective actions, and confirming readiness for subsequent testing stages.
  • Support owner training, turnover documentation, and transition of systems to the facility operations team.
  • Follow MCE and project safety requirements at all times.
  • Work primarily from the Edmonton project site and travel to other client and project locations across Alberta and Canada, as required.
  • Perform other duties and support other project activities as assigned from time to time by the Lead Data Centre Commissioning Engineer & Project Manager, Cx A Principal, or senior management.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in electrical construction, testing, commissioning, design, operations, maintenance, or related technical work is preferred.
  • Foundational understanding of electrical distribution systems, critical power infrastructure, controls, and system interdependencies.
  • Familiarity with redundancy, availability, resilience, failover, and recovery concepts in mission-critical environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical drawings, specifications, control diagrams, and equipment manuals.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and technical documentation skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical notes, test records, and reports.
  • Collaborative, dependable, and professional approach; able to work independently in the field and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering, analysis, or documentation software.
  • Ability to work safely in active construction and mission-critical environments.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel 15-30% as required.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a data centre, healthcare, utility, industrial, or other mission-critical environment.
  • Experience with generators, UPS systems, switchgear, protective relaying, ATS/STS, EPMS, or power-monitoring systems.
  • Hands-on use of electrical test instruments such as power-quality analysers, insulation-resistance testers, or infrared cameras.
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes and L1-L5 testing.
  • EIT designation or eligibility for registration as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA is an asset.
  • Working Conditions
  • Regular site work on active construction sites and in operating facilities, including electrical rooms, mechanical plants, generator yards, and rooftops.
  • Walking and standing actively on site for up to 8 hours a day, including climbing stairs and ladders.
  • Lifting and carrying test equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lb (23 kg).
  • Wearing arc-rated clothing and other personal protective equipment as required by MCE and site safety rules.
  • Occasional evening, overnight, or weekend work when systems can be tested only outside normal operating hours.
  • Work in noisy equipment areas and outdoors in all seasons.
