Role Description

Reporting to the Director of Fleet & Infrastructure, the Fleet Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operational support, maintenance coordination, and technical oversight of APA's fleet assets. Acting as a key point of contact for vessel crews, contractors, and internal stakeholders, the Fleet Manager helps ensure fleet operations remain safe, reliable, and responsive to operational demands. • Build and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, service providers, and external stakeholders to support fleet operations and maintenance activities.
  • Communicate and reinforce safe work practices, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and operational procedures.
  • Monitor fleet performance and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Assist with maintenance planning, asset management initiatives, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Provide leadership and operational support within a 24/7 marine environment, including occasional after-hours support when required.

The ideal candidate is a technically strong marine engineering or marine operations professional with a practical, operations-focused mindset. You enjoy troubleshooting complex issues, coordinating resources, supporting frontline crews, and serving as the go-to person when challenges arise. You thrive in fast-paced environments where technical expertise, sound judgment, and strong communication skills are equally important.

  • Marine engineering certification is preferred; candidates with significant marine industry experience may also be considered.
  • Experience supporting vessel operations, maintenance programs, or marine asset management activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues involving marine systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of vessel maintenance practices, regulatory requirements, and marine safety standards.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, service providers, and technical projects.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with vessel crews, contractors, and operational stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing demands and make sound decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Leadership experience gained through operational, supervisory, or project-based responsibilities.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Atlantic Canada on a planned basis, typically a few days per month.
  • Experience working within a unionized environment is considered an asset.

By joining the Atlantic Pilotage Authority, you will play a critical role in supporting the safe and reliable operation of a fleet that serves ports throughout Atlantic Canada. This is an opportunity to work closely with experienced marine professionals while making a direct impact on operational performance, safety, and service delivery. You will join a respected organization with a strong reputation in the marine industry and a commitment to continuous improvement and employee development.
