Director, Practice Delivery and Innovation in Toronto

McMillan has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Practice Delivery & Innovation. This newly created role will set the strategic direction for how the Firm’s practice delivery professionals grow, evolve, and deliver value, with an initial focus on the national law clerk and paralegal function. The Director will provide leadership to a team of 80 professionals, champion their work, and ensure they have the skills, tools, training and support to deliver outstanding service as the practice of law evolves.

The role will lead legal services and operating model transformation, with a focus on agility and continuous improvement. This work includes rethinking how work is organized and delivered, translating complex workflows into practical services, and creating scalable, technology-enabled delivery models. The goal is to improve quality, responsiveness, consistency and client value in how law clerk and paralegal services are delivered across the Firm.

Working closely with the Director, Law Clerks and Paralegals, and professionals across the team, this role will challenge traditional methods and modernize how services are delivered to lawyers, practice groups and clients. The successful candidate will bring a strategic mindset, operational rigour, legal workflow expertise and collaborative leadership to redesign processes, improve systems, and enhance practice and client service delivery.

What You'll Do:

• Set the strategic direction for the national law clerk and paralegal function, including a focused innovation, transformation, technology and AI roadmap.
• Design strategies to improve processes, rethink ways of working, and build scalable service delivery models.
• Elevate the strategic role of law clerks and paralegals by identifying how workflow redesign, technology and new delivery models can reduce routine work.
• Identify, pilot and integrate technologies, including AI and automation, that improve workflows.
• Establish data, performance frameworks and operational metrics to measure impact.
• Partner with practice leaders and cross-functional teams to align services with practice needs.
• Enable and champion change management across the law clerk and paralegal function.
• Provide strategic direction and day-to-day operational oversight to the Director, Law Clerks and Paralegals.
• Contribute to the Firm’s strategic planning for innovation and operational excellence.
• Accountable for the management of operational budgets and resource allocation.
• Accountable for the development and maintenance of operational playbooks and standard operating procedures.

What You Bring:

• LLB or JD required.
• Minimum seven (7) years of progressive experience in legal operations or practice management.
• Experience overseeing paralegal, law clerk, or legal support teams.
• Proven track record leading process improvement and technology-enabled transformation.
• Strategic and systems thinker with the ability to architect scalable operating models.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver compelling presentations.
• Strong analytical and data-driven mindset.
• Collaborative leader who builds productive partnerships across functional boundaries.
• Project management, change management, or legal operations certifications are considered assets.
• A commitment to leading with empathy and celebrating diverse lived experiences.
