In alignment with our commitment to fostering Indigenous leadership in health sciences and academic excellence, this is a special priority call for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis scholars.

The McGill University Department of Family Medicine is dedicated to deepening its engagement with Indigenous communities and expanding its leadership, research, and teaching capacity in areas relevant to Indigenous health. We invite applications from scholars who integrate relevant experience and expertise in Indigenous knowledges, methodologies, histories, traditions, languages, or systems of laws and governance. We encourage applications from scholars who employ CBPR (community-based participatory research) methods.

By integrating these vital perspectives into our research and pedagogical frameworks, the successful candidate will play a transformative role in expanding the department’s capacity for impactful, community-aligned health.

The department is home to an exceptional community of primary health care professionals and scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds. Our diverse group of researchers, students, and support staff are committed to contributing to the health of the population by training graduate students (MSc and PhD), residents, medical students, and other health care professionals.

Our educational and research mission supports excellent and innovative programs, promoting innovation in practice, developing research and scholarly activity, promoting curriculum innovation and education research, and actively engaging in international and global health activities.

The department is involved in diverse scholarly pursuits and is committed to the advancement of the academic discipline of family medicine, community health, and primary care. Current active areas of investigation include health services and policy, knowledge translation, public health, medical education, global health, information technology, diverse qualitative methods and methodologies, clinical care, and biostatistics.

With graduate programs at both the master’s and PhD levels, we are methodological leaders in participatory and mixed-methods research with a demonstrated record of national and international leadership with extensive collaborations with other departments, faculties, and communities. These activities are strengthened through close integration with the McGill health network (RUISSS), spanning a large geographical region that includes Montreal (Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe) and extends to northern regions including the Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee, in partnership with the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB), and Nunavik.

Comprising twelve urban and rural University Family Medicine Groups across the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal and broader Quebec, our clinics serve a registered patient base exceeding 140,000. Affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, these groups provide an opportunity to bridge the gap between research, education, and community health.

The successful nominee for this Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 1 will possess a distinguished record of research excellence, characterized by significant national and international recognition within the fields of Family Medicine or Primary Care.
