Introduction: Love turning engineering ideas into precise, buildable drawings? We’re working with an engineering organisation that tackles some of the most important engineering challenges of our time, and they’re looking for a Marine Designer Technologist to join their multi-disciplinary team in Canada. You’ll produce 2D drawings and 3D models for ships and submarines across structural, mechanical and electrical domains – from survey through to fabrication and installation – with the guidance of senior colleagues and real support for your career growth. Diversity, equity and inclusion sit at the heart of how they work, as does their commitment to a safer, more efficient and sustainable future.
What will I be doing?
- Create new and update existing 2D and 3D ship and submarine drawings covering structural, mechanical and electrical domains
- Apply project and company CAD standards, drawing conventions, title block requirements, revision control and configuration management procedures
- Carry out ship and submarine surveys and site verification – validating existing structures and system configurations, incorporating as-fitted details into drawing packages, and producing survey reports in client, Class or standard formats
- Apply IMO regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders
- Resolve technical issues of moderate scope and complexity – developing design or technical specifications for complex repairs, and assessing structures and systems against codes and standards to determine required repairs, design changes and refits
- Provide input to risk assessments for design and repair specifications
- Support the Capability departments in delivering engineering services to internal and external customers, working independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Work within the Quality Management System (QMS), business and ethics codes of conduct, and engineering best practice under the guidance of senior staff
- Mentor junior staff as they develop their technical competency
- Help shape a positive team culture through feedback, team building and wellness activities
What do I need to succeed?
- A College Technologist Diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline
- At least 5 years’ CAD and drafting experience producing engineering, detailed design or production drawings for ships, submarines or other marine assets
- Advanced 2D drafting and 3D modelling skills in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino or similar
- Provincial certification as an Engineering Technologist
- Proven experience producing general arrangements, structural drawings and details, equipment layouts (including system schematics, piping arrangements and electrical wire diagrams), and detailed fabrication and installation drawings
- Knowledge of marine and ship design, including staged design development and maintaining design intent
- Proven experience applying IMO regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders
- Eligibility for Canadian security clearance
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada
Nice to have:
- Experience supporting a Marine Drawing Office
- Practical experience with marine platform systems (small or large boats)
- Experience in a fast-paced commercial shipyard environment
- Knowledge of Department of Defence drawing templates and standards
What’s in it for me?
- A competitive salary based on your skills, ability and experience
- Medical, dental and vision plan, including a Health Care Spending Account
- Flexible working hours and hybrid working
- RRSP or TFSA matching
- Parental/maternity leave top-up
- Employee and Family Assistance Programme
- Training and development opportunities
- Employee recognition and referral programmes
