We are looking for a Senior Java Developer to join our Logistics Areas and Fees team. If you are passionate about building scalable, high-throughput backend services and thrive in a fast-paced, high-scale environment, this role is for you. This role is open to candidates based in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa or Winnipeg.
As a Senior Java Developer within our Logistics domain, you will play a key role in architecting, developing, and operating the core services and distributed systems that power delivery areas & fees related calculations. You will own backend systems end-to-end, from system architecture and API design to deployment, observability, and performance optimization, ensuring high availability and low-latency execution across our platform.
Your mission is to deliver robust, performant, and resilient Java-based services, working closely with cross-functional teams of engineers, product managers, and data analysts to ship critical backend infrastructure that our internal operators and the wider logistics platform rely on every day. You will champion modern Java standards, system reliability, and software engineering best practices, while mentoring team members and helping shape the technical direction of backend engineering within the organization.
These are some of the key components of the position:
- Maintain existing and develop new microservices using Java 21.
- Extend the functionality of existing applications per Business requests.
- Maintain existing and develop new infrastructure resources on the AWS platform using Terraform.
- Work with a microservices architecture using REST API and Message Brokers.
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services and APIs using Java.
- Participate in architectural decisions, RFCs, and technical design reviews across the Logistics domain.
- Collaborate with Product, QE, and Data colleagues to ship high-quality releases on a continuous delivery cadence.
- Own your work throughout the entire product development lifecycle, from technical design and planning to market release.
- Review the code of peers in a team.
- Support and mentor team members, helping grow backend engineering as a discipline.
- Identify improvements, highlight risks vs benefits, and translate them into technical requirements.
- Work with the product team, providing technical knowledge and expertise, helping to design the future of our products.
- Participate in paid on-call rotation.
What will you bring to the team?
- 7+ years of hands-on experience architecting and building scalable, high-performance enterprise applications and leading complex software development projects.
- Be curious, with a strong appetite for new knowledge.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, design patterns, testing, and debugging.
- Solid understanding of consuming, producing, and designing RESTful web services.
- Experience with Java (Spark or Quarkus framework).
- Experience with streams and list operations is a nice-to-have.
- Solid grounding in design patterns for designing distributed systems (bounded contexts, sagas, eventual consistency, and the outbox pattern) (must have).
- Experience in Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is a strong nice-to-have.
- Experience with message brokers (Kafka, Amazon SQS, RabbitMQ).
- Production experience deploying to AWS and running services on Kubernetes (EKS).
- Experience with System logging and monitoring using tools such as Grafana, AWS CloudWatch and DataDog.
- Experience with data persistence in relational, MySQL, unstructured and/or cached forms.
- Strong experience with Redis for caching, rate limiting and distributed locks is a plus.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-a-Code (Terraform) is nice-to-have.
- Understanding of continuous delivery, deployment, and integration.
- Familiarity with Version Control (Git) and related tools.
AI & Modern Engineering Capabilities
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex or similar is required.
- Experience making repositories agent-ready, maintaining clear in-repo documentation, AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md files, structured code conventions, and reproducible local setups so AI coding agents can contribute effectively.
- Experience using AI agents to drive end-to-end engineering tasks (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor agents, or similar) for code generation, refactoring, debugging, and automated PR workflows.
- Experience integrating AI into backend engineering workflows (e.g., AI-assisted code review, test generation, log/incident analysis, intelligent on-call triage).
- Understanding of prompt engineering and evaluation of AI-generated outputs in a software engineering context.
- Awareness of best practices for AI-driven development, including reliability, reproducibility, security, and governance, particularly as they apply to production backend systems.
