The Saanich Peninsula Hospital's (SPH) department of Emergency Medicine is currently looking to hire Emergency Medicine Physicians. SPH is a 65 bed acute care community hospital with a 16 bed emergency department (ED) that cares for 36,000 patients/year, both pediatric and adult. SPH is the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands, serving a total population of approximately 87,000.

The ED is staffed by a dedicated, progressive, collegial group of 28 full time and part time emergency physicians, currently scheduled over 7 shifts/day with 15 hours of double/triple coverage. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Gastroenterology and Anesthesiology are available within the hospital during daytime hours, with numerous other Specialists in the community. Tertiary care support and consultants are 30 minutes away by road at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory and Medical Imaging, including a CT scanner, operates 07:30 - 24:00 daily plus on call overnight.

Physicians must be comfortable in a single coverage department with limited on site Respiratory Therapy and no local ICU support. Affiliation with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program provides regular teaching opportunities to medical students and residents within the ED. Applicants must hold CCFP-EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine, and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

The group is actively seeking candidates with community hospital ED experience, flexibility in scheduling and availability to fill "crisis call in" volume and acuity work for the department. The successful candidates will enjoy flexibility in scheduling and fantastic lifestyle opportunities on beautiful Vancouver Island.
