York University is one of Canada’s top ranked institutions, recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and social impact. Located across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), one of the most diverse and dynamic communities in the world, York offers a vibrant and inclusive environment for teaching, research, and community engagement.

York University’s School of Medicine, embedded within the Faculty of Health, is a newly established medical school launching in 2028 with an ambitious mission to shape the next generation of physicians through innovation, compassion, and discovery. Guided by the School of Medicine Strategic Plan, the School is at a pivotal moment of foundation building, requiring leaders who are energized by the opportunity to help shape its future and build meaningful partnerships with communities and health systems across Ontario.

Through its Integrated Community-based Learning Network (ICLN), the School is advancing a distributed model of medical education that connects learners to diverse clinical settings, reinforcing its commitment to community engagement from the outset.

The successful candidate will be appointed as Associate Dean Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) with an initial 5-year term, with the possibility of renewal. The role is expected to require 2 to 4 days per week, with flexible scheduling intended to complement active clinical practice. This is an open clinical faculty appointment in the Clinical Professorial Stream, as described in the University’s Clinical Faculty Appointments Policy.

The Associate Dean will lead the development of postgraduate medical education from the ground up, establishing the structures, systems, and culture that will define residency training at York. Central to this role is building strong, trusted relationships with clinical partners, healthcare organizations, and communities across Ontario as the School launches and expands its distributed training model.

The Associate Dean will provide strategic, academic, and operational leadership for the design, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of residency programs, ensuring alignment with national accreditation standards and the School’s mission of social accountability. Working closely with senior academic leaders, Program Directors, and partners across the ICLN, the Associate Dean will advance competency-based medical education (CBME), lead accreditation processes, foster a learner-centred and inclusive training environment, and contribute to institutional planning and innovation across the medical education continuum.

The ideal candidate will be a respected academic physician and collaborative leader with significant experience in postgraduate medical education and academic medicine. They will bring a demonstrated track record of leadership in accredited residency programs, with deep knowledge of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and/or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) accreditation standards and CBME. The successful candidate will have experience working within complex, distributed or community-based training environments, along with a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and program development.

They will possess exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders across academic, clinical, and health system settings. A commitment to learner-centred education, continuous quality improvement, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenous engagement is essential. An MD (or equivalent), eligibility for licensure in Ontario, and academic credentials suitable for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Clinical Professor are required.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval. Clinical faculty are hired in their professional capacity as a member of the medical profession because they are required to apply their medical training, medical knowledge, and medical skills in connection with the performance of their duties and responsibilities.

York welcomes and employs scholars from all over the world. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.

Due date for completed applications: May 15th, 2026.
