At HDR, our employee-owners are fully engaged in creating a welcoming environment where each of us is valued and respected, a place where everyone is empowered to bring their authentic selves and novel ideas to work every day. We believe building engineering is more than systems and structures; it’s about powering progress and enabling innovation.

As part of HDR’s Building Engineering Services Group, you’ll help design the critical infrastructure that supports the digital age and shapes the spaces where people work, connect, and thrive. From high-performance data centers driving the future of AI to dynamic commercial environments, your work will directly support technological advancement, sustainability, and human experience.

HDR is seeking a Structural BIM Designer to support the delivery of complex building and infrastructure projects across Canada and North America. In this role, you will contribute directly to the development of structural models, drawings, and coordinated design packages, working within an integrated, multi-disciplinary team environment. You will be actively involved from early design through construction, supporting the production of high-quality, coordinated deliverables aligned with project requirements and schedules.

Reporting to the Technical Specialist – Mass Timber, you will work alongside structural engineers and other discipline leads to develop and maintain BIM models, prepare detailed drawings, and support coordination with architectural, MEP, and civil teams. The role requires a strong understanding of structural systems, constructability, and BIM workflows within a collaborative delivery environment.

In this role, you will also play a key part in translating mass timber design concepts into coordinated, constructible models and drawings. The quality and clarity of your modeling work will directly influence how these structures are realized in the field.

Our project portfolio spans a diverse range of sectors, including educational, civic, defense, data centers, healthcare, industrial, water/wastewater, and commercial developments. Projects are located across North America.

In the role of Structural BIM Designer, we'll count on you to:

  • Work for a specific discipline, under the direct supervision of an Architect/Engineer, or other technical professional.
  • Create and maintain the discipline model, systems, content, and overall digital delivery output for that discipline.
  • Be proactive in communicating BIM progress, clashes, and issues, and in assessing, planning, and communicating modeling workload, priorities, and schedule impacts.
  • Interpret structural sketches and design intent, and translate them into detailed drawings in accordance with company drafting standards.
  • Continuously improve drawing clarity, readiness, and communication of design information, and organize drawings in a clear and logical manner.
  • Accurately model the BIM elements in the correct special constraints of the modeling environment, using the current 3D software.
  • Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, & diagrams of the design within the project scope, schedule, and budget, using the current 3D software.
  • Maintain the discipline model including project information, coordinates, scales, orientations, scope boundaries, match-lines, views, and sheets.
  • Produce discipline specific documentation with accurate annotations on all modeling output.
  • Monitor, improve, and maintain company standards and model health.
  • Coordinate the design with other discipline models through Design Reviews and the 3D Coordination process.

Our ideal candidate will have a passion for innovation, collaboration, new experiences, opportunities and exceeding client expectations. Our goal is to help our clients achieve high performance in safety, quality, cost efficiency and profitability for their capital projects and ongoing operations.

Please note that shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a Revit skills assessment to demonstrate their proficiency with Revit software focused on typical structural/Mass Timber project workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in Revit.
  • Proficient in Auto CAD.
  • Experience with A/E consulting firms.
  • Adaptability to evolving BIM technologies and the ability to implement automation workflows will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to rigorously audit, validate, and verify all AI-generated outputs where it’s applicable to the role.
  • Experience using AI productivity tools to accelerate project workstreams.

Required Qualifications

  • Technical degree or a minimum of 3 years related industry experience.
  • Technically qualified with 3D design software and document management infrastructure.
  • Competency of Microsoft Office products and communication tools.
  • Experience with 3D Coordination tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational traits are essential.
  • Intermediate understanding of engineering or architectural concepts.
