The Data Engineering organization at General Motors is building a unified Vehicle Data Platform that moves data and configuration between vehicle ECUs and the cloud. Our team delivers software on every compute module the company has. Our software is delivered as libraries, apps, and services on Android, Linux, and QNX and covers four areas:
- The control plane retrieves configuration from the cloud and applies it across the vehicle's ECUs.
- The data plane collects, processes, and forwards data from vehicle systems to cloud storage.
- The SDK lets application teams use the platform.
- The unified logging infrastructure manages logs across the vehicle software stack.
We are looking for a Staff Software Developer to set technical direction and lead the work that spans these areas. You will make architecture decisions with the team, lead initiatives across organizations, and mentor senior and junior engineers. You will work with application, platform, cloud, cybersecurity, and privacy teams to deliver software on production ECUs with limited CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth.
Responsibilities:
- Set technical direction for the control plane and the data plane, and for how the two integrate.
- Drive the technical direction of managing thousands of vehicles from a single control plane.
- Design the unified logging infrastructure that manages logs across the vehicle software stack.
- Define the SDK architecture, API design, versioning, and adoption approach for application teams.
- Set the approach for delivering the team's software on Android, Linux, and QNX.
- Design, implement, and maintain on-vehicle software across these areas.
- Optimize data egress and configuration delivery over intermittent connectivity.
- Integrate with cloud services such as Azure, AWS S3, and Firestore.
- Set standards for reliability, performance, data privacy, and resource use on production ECUs.
- Define health metrics and observability for the software in production.
- Lead initiatives across organizations to drive integration, alignment, and adoption.
- Work with product stakeholders to define the SDK roadmap.
- Report status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership and partner teams.
- Contribute to the open source community.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers, support team growth, and promote best practices.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 6+ years of hands-on development experience in C, C++, and related languages.
- Experience developing software for Linux, Android, and QNX platforms.
- Understanding of distributed systems, configuration management, and large scale data pipelines.
- Experience designing, developing, or operating a control plane or fleet management system.
- Experience designing logging or telemetry software for operational visibility.
- Experience delivering SDKs or libraries used by other engineering teams.
- Understanding of network communication and security protocols.
- Familiarity with Autosar standards.
- Experience leading initiatives across organizations.
- Expertise in software development and optimization.
- Experience troubleshooting issues in production environments.
- Technical communication and design documentation skills.
- Has delivered software in a production environment and supported it once in the field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms and their device management services.
- Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, protobuf, and gRPC.
- Experience building fleet management, OTA, or remote configuration systems.
- Knowledge of security best practices for device provisioning and authentication.
- Experience designing driver or HMI initiated capture flows.
- Automotive domain familiarity: ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
