Job Posting Description

Lease Accountant (1 year contract)

This is a onsite role []

Contract: Duration: 1 year

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Real Estate Administration & Analysis, the Lease Accountant is responsible for the accurate accounting, reporting, and financial administration of the LCBO lease portfolio. The role applies IFRS 16 requirements to lease data and transactions. It supports month-end and year-end close activities. Additionally, it ensures lease-related balances are complete, accurate, and supported by effective controls.

This is a finance-focused role for an accounting professional. The professional can interpret lease terms, translate them into accurate financial treatment, investigate variances, and provide clear analysis to Finance, Real Estate, and business partners. It is not a real estate sales, leasing, or brokerage position.

About the Role

  • Apply IFRS 16 requirements to new leases, renewals, amendments, terminations, rent changes, incentives, and other lease events, including the appropriate accounting treatment and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare monthly lease accounting entries, reconciliations, continuity schedules, and supporting working papers. Review these items for right-of-use assets, lease liabilities, interest, depreciation, rent, and occupancy-related accounts.
  • Perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities for the lease portfolio, investigating variances and resolving reconciling items within established timelines.
  • Review lease agreements and financial terms to ensure accurate setup and maintenance of accounting data, including commencement dates, payment schedules, renewal options, escalation clauses, and incentives.
  • Complete IFRS 16 calculations and validate system outputs, including remeasurements and lease modifications, to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Analyze rent, operating costs, property taxes, and occupancy expenses; identify billing discrepancies, recoveries, missed credits, and opportunities to strengthen financial accuracy and controls.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, accruals, KPI reporting, and variance analysis for lease and occupancy costs, providing clear explanations and financial insights.
  • Maintain the integrity of lease accounting systems, real estate records, and reporting tools through data validation, reconciliations, and documented controls.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, evidence, reconciliations, and explanations related to lease accounting and financial controls.
  • Partner with Finance, Real Estate, landlords, and other partners to resolve accounting issues, clarify lease terms, and improve processes.
  • Investigate property tax assessments, appeals, and related financial impacts.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline. We consider a CPA designation, or progress toward completion, an asset.
  • We require a demonstrated hands-on experience applying IFRS 16 in a lease accounting environment.
  • You have 3+ years of experience with lease accounting calculations, journal entries, account reconciliations, balance-sheet continuity, month-end close, and financial statement support.
  • You have financial skills, with the ability to interpret lease agreements, assess accounting impacts, analyze complex data, and explain variances.
  • You have advanced Excel skills, including large datasets, reconciliations, formulas, pivot tables, and financial models. Experience with ERP, lease administration, or lease accounting systems is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • You have knowledge of internal controls, audit support, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and property tax or occupancy cost accounting.
  • You have a strong commitment to data integrity, documentation, and accuracy.
  • You have the ability to investigate issues, determine root causes, and implement practical solutions.
  • You have the ability to collaborate across Finance, Real Estate, and external partners.
  • You are proactive and organized, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.

We offer a comprehensive suite of benefits, including:

  • Access to an Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • A Defined Benefit Pension.
  • Discounts on products and services via Workperks.
