The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) is a member-based organization that serves as the collective voice for more than 2,000 physician members practicing in hospitals, community clinics, long-term care facilities, and academic settings, as well as medical learners and those who have retired from the profession. As a member-driven, non-profit organization, we represent the political, clinical, and economic interests of the medical profession and advocate for equitable access to quality care for all.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Member Relations and Engagement is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the organization’s member relations function, with a strong focus on member engagement, trust-building, and responsive support. This role is critical to strengthening relationships with our members (physicians, residents, and medical students), ensuring members feel heard, supported, and connected to the organization’s strategic plan and mandate.

You will spend your time designing and delivering member engagement strategies, facilitating physician groups, supporting onboarding and member experience initiatives, and translating member feedback into actionable recommendations for leadership. The role combines strategic planning with hands-on relationship management and issue navigation.

Your leadership will allow you to bring a strategic, innovative mindset and shape the member relations function from the ground up. You are energized by the opportunity to create something new, translating vision into practical systems and processes that strengthen the member experience and position the Association to meet the evolving needs of physicians, residents, and medical students.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Member Engagement Strategy: Lead the design and implementation of member engagement strategies that strengthen relationships with members, increase participation in programs, services, and events, and build a diverse pipeline of physician leaders for committees, governance bodies, and the Board of Directors.
  • Member Advocacy and Support: Serve as a senior, trusted point of contact and issue navigator for member relations matters, coordinating responses across teams, helping members navigate complex systems and processes, and ensuring concerns are addressed professionally and effectively.
  • Strategic Advice and Issue Management: Identify emerging health system issues, assess their implications for members and organizational priorities, and translate member input into recommendations and strategic action.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Build trusted relationships with physicians, physician leadership structures, and external partners; represent the organization on committees and stakeholder tables; and support coordinated, member-centred approaches across the organization.
  • Team Development and Capacity Building: In collaboration with senior leadership, establish and grow the member relations function, assess capacity needs, support recruitment and onboarding as appropriate, and provide leadership and mentorship as the team evolves.
  • Onboarding and Member Experience: Oversee and improve the member onboarding experience, ensuring new members are welcomed, informed, and connected early, and partner with internal teams to align related materials, processes, and communications.
  • Operational Partnership and Coordination: Use member data and engagement information to inform planning, reporting, and decision-making; align member relations efforts with advocacy, negotiation, legal, communications, and programming functions; and support consistent processes for tracking concerns, themes, and follow-up actions.

Who You Are: You bring a strong understanding of stakeholder engagement, community-building, and change management, with the confidence to navigate a complex, and often high-pressure membership environment. You are a skilled communicator who brings sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and resilience to difficult discussions. You understand the realities of the physician experience, including the pressures of clinical practice, administrative burden, system change, professional uncertainty, and member frustration.

What You’ll Bring: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 7 years of senior leadership experience in member relations, physician engagement, healthcare administration, professional associations, advocacy, public affairs, or related field. Proven ability to build trusted relationships, facilitate complex or sensitive discussions, navigate conflict, and support members through challenging situations with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment.

What We Offer: Make a meaningful impact on physicians, patients, and the health care system across Newfoundland and Labrador. Work with a collaborative, inclusive, and values-driven team. Professional growth and development opportunities. Fair and equitable compensation aligned with market. Competitive annual leave offerings (starting at 20 days per year). Comprehensive health, dental, life, and accidental death & dismemberment insurance. Parental leave program and Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP). Wellness benefits, including Health Spending and Healthy Living Accounts.

Location & Working Conditions: St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. This role may be performed remotely or from an NLMA office, subject to operational requirements and NLMA workplace policies. This is a member-facing leadership role within a small, collaborative team, with regular interaction with physicians, physician leaders, medical learners, and health system partners across the province.

Hours & Travel: The standard workweek is Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though a flexible workweek helps provide work-life balance and helps mitigate the impact of overtime and travel. This is a member-facing role and requires attendance at meetings outside regular business hours, including evenings and occasional weekends.

Application Close Date: Sunday, November 15th, 2026, 11:59 PM Newfoundland time. We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. The NLMA is committed to a work environment that celebrates and encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
