Building code interpretation and permitting expertise define this full time Building Code Specialist role with the City of Vancouver. Apply technical judgment in Vancouver. This position makes independent decisions for the Chief Building Official regarding the Building By-law and permitting. It oversees Certified Professional projects, reviews complex plans, and coordinates Project Coordinators. The work requires code interpretation, technical analysis, and communication with design professionals, applicants, and public-service staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Authorize building permit issuance under the Building By-law
- Interpret codes for projects and resolve applicant questions
- Manage Certified Professional projects and review complex plans
- Analyze Alternative Solutions with Chief Building Official staff
- Advise inspection, fire, health, and engineering staff
Requirements:
- Degree in architecture or civil or mechanical engineering
- Professional Engineer or Architect registration eligibility in British Columbia
- Considerable plans examination and Building By-law interpretation experience
- Knowledge of BC Building Code, fire protection codes, and standards
- Leadership, mentoring, supervisory, and communication skills
- Support Vancouver permitting through Building By-law expertise, complex plans examination, Certified Professional oversight, and clear technical guidance.
