CANEIL is expanding its engineering team to support a growing portfolio of energy transition, industrial, and decarbonization projects throughout Canada and the United States. We are seeking a Senior Process Engineer with deep expertise in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to lead process engineering on an upcoming client project in Alberta, starting January 2027. The role is based in Calgary, with in-office work at the client's office preferred. Remote arrangements will be considered for candidates with extensive carbon capture experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is intended for an experienced process engineer who has designed, built, or operated carbon capture facilities and can own the process design from concept through startup. The work is expected to involve point-source CO₂ capture integrated with an existing facility, along with downstream dehydration, compression, and pipeline or storage interfaces. A minimum of 10 years of process engineering experience is required, including at least 5 years on CO₂ capture or closely related gas treating projects. Candidates who have served as lead process engineer on a capture project that reached FEED or construction are strongly encouraged to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead process engineering for carbon capture systems through technology selection, FEED, detailed design, and construction support.
  • Evaluate capture technologies (e.g., amine and advanced solvents, sorbents, membranes) for capture rate, energy use, cost, and integration with the host facility.
  • Prepare and review key process deliverables, including: Design basis and heat and material balances; PFDs and P&IDs; Process and equipment data sheets; Relief load summaries, control narratives, and operating philosophies.
  • Develop and validate process simulations of absorption, solvent regeneration, CO₂ dehydration, and compression systems.
  • Size and specify major equipment, and optimize regeneration energy, steam and power demand, and heat integration.
  • Define CO₂ product specifications for pipeline transport and storage, and address solvent degradation, emissions, and corrosion in the design.
  • Lead or participate in HAZOP, LOPA, and other process safety reviews.
  • Review vendor and licensor proposals and documentation to confirm guaranteed performance.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines, clients, licensors, and EPC partners, and perform QA/QC of process deliverables.
  • Support procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and performance testing.
  • Assist with proposals, estimates, schedules, and regulatory or funding submissions.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Process Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of process engineering experience in oil and gas, gas processing, refining, petrochemical, power, or similar heavy industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on experience on carbon capture or closely related gas treating projects (e.g., amine treating, acid gas removal, CO₂ recovery).
  • Demonstrated experience developing heat and material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, and data sheets for projects that progressed to FEED, detailed design, or construction.
  • Strong knowledge of mass transfer, thermodynamics, solvent selection, and absorber and stripper design.
  • Expert‑level proficiency with Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, ProMax, ProTreat, or similar simulation software.
  • Understanding of CO₂ dehydration, compression, dense‑phase handling, and pipeline purity specifications.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as API 520/521, ASME B31.3, CSA Z662, and CSA Z741.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and client‑facing skills.
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) with APEGA, or eligibility to register within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada and available to start in January 2027.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as lead process engineer on a commercial‑scale or large demonstration carbon capture project.
  • Experience with capture on oil sands, upgrading, refining, hydrogen, gas processing, cement, or power facilities.
  • Experience working with technology licensors and integrating capture units into existing (brownfield) facilities.
  • Experience with CO₂ compression, transportation pipelines, and injection or storage facilities.
  • Familiarity with Alberta and Canadian CCUS frameworks, including AER requirements, the federal CCUS Investment Tax Credit, and Alberta's TIER program.
  • Previous consulting, EPC, or owner's engineer experience.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field.

WHY JOIN CANEIL

  • Work on high‑impact carbon capture and decarbonization projects in one of Canada's most active CCUS markets.
  • Own the process design from an early stage and directly shape capture performance and operability.
  • Join a growing, collaborative multidisciplinary team with room to influence technical practices and future growth.
  • Choose full‑time permanent or contract opportunities, depending on qualifications and availability.
  • Receive support for continuing education and professional licensure.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The expected starting base salary range for this position is $125,000 – $130,000 per year, based on experience, qualifications, professional designation, and overall suitability for the role. Candidates with significantly greater experience or specialized carbon capture expertise may be considered above the stated range. Contract compensation is also available for candidates engaged on a contract basis. Standard benefits package for eligible full‑time employees, including extended health care, dental coverage, paid vacation, etc. Flexible in‑office, hybrid, or remote work arrangements, subject to project and client requirements.
