Staff Firmware Engineer

The Safety Firmware Team builds the next generation of intelligent video and AI-driven safety solutions, bringing high-performance camera systems and real-time edge computing into Samsara's fleet and industrial products. This role is for a hands-on technical leader who goes deep on firmware but is just as comfortable across the full stack: embedded systems, Go backend services, and web and mobile surfaces.

In this role, you will:

• Own outcomes end-to-end, from a vague customer problem to a shipped, measured feature.
• Drive technology choices, implement embedded and firmware solutions, and establish architectural patterns.
• Leverage voice as the new interface, powering AI Agents.
• Design for the whole system: device constraints, connectivity, cloud services, and fleet-scale rollout.
• Identify opportunities and start strategic conversations that influence the direction of our technology and engineering culture.
• Ensure the accuracy of the AI algorithms we run at the edge.
• Build with AI agents by default.
• Partner closely with the Hardware team to define and build next-generation devices.
• Lead teams in delivering products and capabilities that contribute to Samsara's products and revenue.
• Solve the hardest technical problems and help products reach the market quickly, with high quality.
• Act as a multiplier for the team, raising the impact and output of every team member.
• Champion and embed Samsara's cultural principles as we scale globally.

Minimum requirements for the role:

• 10+ years of experience designing, developing, and deploying software, with deep expertise in embedded systems and firmware.
• Deep expertise in at least one embedded domain.
• Has shipped across the stack: firmware, Go backend services, and web or mobile surfaces.
• Strong programming skills in C/C++, Go, Python, or similar.
• Product and systems thinking.
• High agency and execution speed.
• Already uses AI tools in day-to-day engineering work.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver complex, high-impact projects.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• A track record of building systems that do more with less hardware.

An ideal candidate also has:

• Expertise in multimedia frameworks, video codecs, and camera systems.
• Played a prominent role in shaping the engineering culture of a rapidly scaling team.
• Experience deploying CV/ML models on edge devices.
• Background in another scarce-resource industry.

The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Annual Base Salary US: $162,400 - $290,000 | Canada: $154,800 to $212,850
