Are you looking for a role that will challenge you and allow you to apply advanced analytical techniques to real‑world environmental and nuclear science problems? Do you enjoy working with sophisticated instrumentation, developing and optimizing methods, and collaborating within a multidisciplinary laboratory environment? If you do, we are looking for a Chemical Technologist who plays a key role in conducting complex chemical and radiochemical analyses, supporting quality and safety programs, and contributing to projects that meaningfully impact environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance at our Chalk River location.

What you will be doing:

  • Performing day-to-day chemical and radiochemical analyses of samples from diverse matrices, including contaminated and non‑contaminated water, groundwater, wastewater, sediments, soils, and metals, using a variety of analytical instruments, sample preparation techniques, and separation methodologies.
  • Preparing routine progress reports, technical reports, and standard analysis reports by processing chemical analysis data using common operating systems, data handling software, and statistical techniques to account for propagated uncertainties, while receiving and handling radioactive samples in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Assisting with the development, optimization, and documentation of analytical methods, operating procedures, and laboratory protocols in collaboration with professional staff.
  • Supporting the selection and procurement of laboratory supplies and maintaining, commissioning, and troubleshooting analytical instruments required for laboratory operations.
  • Applying standard Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures, maintaining accurate quality records, and implementing radiation protection practices following appropriate training to mitigate the spread of contamination.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

Education: Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position (such as Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Technology) or equivalent formal education. OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent, and more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training. A Bachelor's Degree is desired.

Experience: Experience with a Laboratory Information Management (LIMS) system is an asset. Experience in applying standard QA/QC procedures and in an ISO 17025-accredited lab is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong organizational skills to effectively manage the variety of samples and analyses, with demonstrated attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills to work as part of a team, as well as the ability to work independently to accomplish tasks with excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Excellent working knowledge of inorganic analytical chemistry analysis techniques, including sample handling, preparation, wet chemistry separation techniques, experience in instrumentation, and data calculations. Proper handling and storage of hazardous chemicals are highly desirable. Knowledge and understanding of statistical analyses of data and propagated uncertainties are desirable.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.

Working Conditions: Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week. This position is part of the USW 1568 Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in their Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment. Performance of office and laboratory work. Involves the handling of toxic and hazardous chemicals, and radioactive materials. Occasional work during off-shift hours (including weekends) may be necessary to meet customer requirements.
