CHALLENGES TO BE MET

Investment Sourcing and Underwriting

Help source and assess high-quality venture capital and private equity fund investment opportunities, with a particular focus on defence, dual-use and deep technology. Lead significant components of GP due diligence, including assessment of investment strategy, team, track record and attribution, portfolio construction, sourcing capabilities, fund economics, terms, risks and expected returns. Analyze underlying portfolios and pipelines to assess strategy execution, concentration, market exposure and alignment with BDC's mandate. Prepare investment memoranda and present and defend recommendations to the BDC Capital Funds Investment Committee. Guide Associates and Analysts in the analysis and execution of investment opportunities.

Transaction Execution and Portfolio Management

Participate in negotiations with fund managers and work with Legal and other internal teams on LPAs, side letters and investment documentation. Manage an assigned portfolio of fund investments and maintain strong relationships with GPs. Monitor financial performance, portfolio developments, organizational changes, strategy execution and emerging risks. Develop recommendations on re-ups, amendments, consents and other portfolio decisions. Assess portfolio construction, concentration, pacing, cash flows and risk/return trends to inform future capital allocation. Represent BDC, as appropriate, on LPACs and other investor-governance forums.

Collaboration and Market Presence

Collaborate closely with BDC Capital’s Fund Investments and direct-investing teams and with colleagues across BDC involved in the Defence Platform. Develop relationships with fund managers, institutional investors and other ecosystem participants and represent BDC Capital at relevant industry events. Share market intelligence and insights that support BDC's broader investment and strategic objectives. Coach and support the development of Associates and Analysts.

Prior defence-investing experience is an asset, not a prerequisite. We are looking for a person with the curiosity, judgment and commitment to develop meaningful expertise in Canada's defence and dual-use investment ecosystem. Develop strong knowledge of dual-use and defence technologies, defence procurement cycles, deep-tech commercialization and the role of prime contractors, integrators and government customers. Assess fund managers' defence-sector expertise, networks, technical-diligence capabilities and ability to support portfolio companies in accessing Canadian and allied defence markets. Evaluate relevant indicators including procurement traction, technology and manufacturing readiness, supply-chain resilience and commercial-market potential. Contribute to defence-specific portfolio monitoring and reporting, including financial performance, strategic alignment and material risks. Build relationships across the Canadian and allied defence, investment, government and innovation ecosystems.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • 5-7 years of relevant investment experience, including at least 2 years of direct experience underwriting and/or managing venture capital or private equity fund investments, or in a closely related institutional manager-selection role.
  • Strong understanding of venture capital and/or private equity fund structures, economics, performance analysis and portfolio management.
  • Experience leading significant components of investment due diligence and developing recommendations for an investment committee or equivalent decision-making body.
  • Familiarity with fund documentation and commercial negotiations.
  • Strong financial, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound investment judgment, intellectual curiosity and the ability to manage multiple workstreams with appropriate autonomy.
  • Strong relationship-management skills and the ability to work effectively with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, science, engineering, law or another relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fluency in both Canadian official languages (English & French) is an asset.
