Whether you’re just starting out or bringing years of experience, Spencer Engineering offers a unique opportunity to work on impactful projects in a collaborative and forward-thinking environment.

Your Role as Electrical Engineer (Mine Hoist): Reporting to the Supervisor of Mine Hoist Electrical Engineering Services, you will join the specialized Mine Hoist Division of BESTECH, operating as Spencer Engineering—one of North America’s most respected names in mine hoist engineering. This is a unique opportunity for an Electrical Engineer who is looking to apply strong engineering fundamentals within a highly specialized field. Previous mine hoist experience is not required. Instead, we are seeking an engineer with experience in industrial electrical systems, sound engineering judgment, and a passion for solving complex technical challenges while developing expertise in one of the mining industry’s most critical systems.

Working alongside industry-leading Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Designers, and Technologists, you will contribute to the design, assessment, modernization, and commissioning of mine hoisting systems across North America. Your work will include engineering analysis, electrical system design, technical reporting, field inspections, and project leadership, while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients to deliver practical, high-quality engineering solutions. This role offers an exceptional combination of technical depth, project ownership, and field experience. You’ll have the opportunity to lead engineering assignments from concept through implementation while developing specialized expertise in a niche discipline where few engineers build their careers. Once fully established in the role, you can expect to travel to client sites throughout North America for approximately 25% of your time, with the balance spent collaborating with our multidisciplinary team from our Owen Sound office.

Contributes to the preparation of project documentation and technical report development.
  • Business Development and Client Management: Identifies and pursues new business opportunities. Lead in the preparation and presentation of single discipline proposals. Manages client communications including regular updates, contract negotiation, and documentation. Addresses and provides resolutions for client concerns. Maintains records of client interactions and project updates.
  • Project Coordination and Management: Leads small project teams, ensuring project delivery meets scopes, schedules, budget, and quality requirements. Provides oversight in planning and execution of projects. Manages project timelines, budgets, and resource allocations. Coordinates and supports the project team, including clients, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Professional Development: Participates in training and certification programs, as required. Attends relevant industry workshops and seminars, as required. Engages in learning opportunities to develop technical and professional skills.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Autodesk drafting and design software tools.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites applications.
  • Intermediate project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to producing high quality work.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Valid Passport required, with the ability to travel in North America.

Working Conditions:
