Job Description Summary: The Internal Auditor delivers high-quality assurance services according to the established methodology. Working closely with the other members of the Enterprise Risk and Assurance (ERA) team, the Internal Auditor performs audits, financial investigations, advisory engagements, and enterprise risk management activities. In addition, the role will implement ERA data analytics strategy to provide more data-driven insights to stakeholders. This position interfaces with a wide range of UBC processes, systems, faculties, and departments. Given frequent access to sensitive information, the role requires discretion, tact, sound professional judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities with a high degree of integrity.

Work Performed:

  • Contributes to building a progressive internal assurance function.
  • Meets project objectives regarding internal audit and advisory engagements and financial investigative work; specifically, under the broad oversight of a Senior Auditor or a Senior Manager:
    • Audit and Advisory: Conducts engagements to evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls that mitigate significant risks.
    • Financial Investigation: Conducts financial investigations by performing analysis to identify indicators of unusual financial activity and trends.
    • Risk Assessment: Identifies and assesses existing and emerging risks by gathering and analyzing relevant risk information.
  • Performs background research to support audit, advisory, and investigation projects.
  • Performs comprehensive qualitative and quantitative data analysis, using advanced techniques and tools to identify trends, anomalies, and potential risks.
  • Performs information gathering and analysis using data analytic tools and emerging technologies (e.g., AI).
  • Transforms complex data and insights into compelling narratives and visual communications that inform decision-making and drive understanding.
  • Prepares reports, summaries, dashboards, presentations, and process documents for senior-level and executive audiences.
  • Monitors prior audit recommendations to ensure corrective actions have been implemented and escalates non-compliance as required.
  • Executes audit program test procedures and documents information and evidence to support observations.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of internal audit and investigation methodologies, processes, and tools.
  • Performs other related duties as required to support the team.

Consequences Of Error / Judgement: ERA provides information directly to senior management and the Board. Failure to exercise judgment in dealing with sensitive and confidential matters could adversely influence the outcome of assurance engagements and negatively impact the reputation of a department and the University. Excellent judgment must be exercised. Lack of good judgment, errors, or incorrect work could result in the failure to detect or prevent University risks. Consequences could include:

  • Mismanagement or misappropriation of university resources.
  • Non-compliance with university policies or statutory obligations.
  • Inaccuracies in university reports.
  • Inaccurate information to senior management or the Board resulting in errors in management decisions.
  • Inadequate or inappropriate risk management.
  • May result in legal and/or labor relations implications.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Senior Manager, Enterprise Risk and Assurance, while working in collaboration with other members of the ERA team. Projects will be assigned based on ERA's priorities. Supervision Given: None.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Completion of at least 7 of the 14 CPA academic prerequisites.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Innovative, dynamic, and adaptive in a fast-paced operating environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and manage competing deadlines.
  • Strong command over Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
