We are looking for a full-time, permanent Senior Manager to lead our small business practice in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This role suits an experienced small business practitioner who knows small business well and wants to build and manage a regional portfolio with the backing of a leading Manitoba firm. You will report directly to the Partners and be the main point of contact for owner-managed businesses, professional practices, and community organizations in the region.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Client service and advisory: You will be the trusted advisor to small and owner-managed businesses. That means meeting with clients regularly about year-end results, cash flow, bookkeeping quality, and planning. You will advise on incorporation and structure, owner-manager remuneration, simple reorganizations (holding companies, share exchanges, and estate freezes), and the purchase, sale, or wind-up of a business. Where a matter becomes complex, you will bring in our tax group.
- Engagement delivery: You will plan, manage, and complete compilation (Notice to Reader), review, and year-end engagements. You will review financial statements and working paper files, and oversee corporate, personal, and trust tax returns, T4 and T5 slips, payroll remittances, GST/HST, and Manitoba retail sales tax. You will also manage budgets, scheduling, WIP, billing, and collections for your portfolio, and make sure firm policies and professional standards are met.
- Team leadership: You will supervise, coach, and develop staff and remote team members on engagement files. This includes reviewing their work, giving regular performance feedback, and supporting recruitment, training, and practice development initiatives.
- Business development and community presence: You will build relationships with local businesses, banks and credit unions, lawyers, and other referral sources. You will represent Baker Tilly HMA LLP and contribute to proposals and growth opportunities.
Key Accounting Requirements
The successful candidate is a confident, hands-on small business practitioner. You should be fluent in these areas:
- Reporting frameworks: ASPE for private enterprises and ASNPO for not-for-profits. PSAS is an asset for community and government-related entities.
- Compilation (CSRS 4200): Scope, independence, report wording, and documentation for engagements with no assurance.
- Review (CSRS 2400): Analytical procedures, inquiry, review documentation, and management representations.
- Notice to Reader and disclosure: Correct wording and note disclosures, and recognizing when an engagement must change type.
- Core accounting issues: Revenue recognition, capital assets, shareholder loans, related-party transactions, income taxes, leases, and subsequent events.
- Reorganizations and transactions: Incorporations, section 85 rollovers, share structures, family business transfers, and the accounting impact of business purchases and sales.
- Tax and compliance: T2, T1, trust returns, T4 and T5 slips, payroll, GST/HST, Manitoba RST. Awareness of Saskatchewan PST for clients.
- Software: CaseWare, Profile, TaxPrep, QuickBooks, Sage 50, and Sage 300. Ability to clean up weak client bookkeeping into reliable year-end files.
- Professional standards: CPA Manitoba requirements, quality management (CSQM), independence and conflict rules, and file retention.
A successful candidate will have:
- 8 to 10 years of public practice experience, primarily with small and owner-managed businesses.
- 3 to 5 years of supervisory or management experience in a public accounting environment.
- Experience executing Notice to Reader and Review engagements, and preparing corporate, personal, and trust returns plus T4s and T5s.
- A track record of building trusted advisor relationships and managing multiple engagements at once.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead, mentor, and develop others and build high-performing teams.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, and strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
- The ability to work independently from a home office.
Additional Assets: Reorganization and succession experience at the small business level; experience with Indigenous governments, economic development corporations, and not-for-profit business development skills; and CPA Canada In-Depth Tax coursework (an asset, not a requirement).
