Why are we hiring?

We are growing and growing fast! This role is a permanent full-time position in our Calgary office as part of our Buildings Team focusing on work in Western Canada.

Job Summary:

Your role would be to support our Buildings Team in the planning, design, and construction of major capital projects at airports across Western Canada with the potential to support projects across all of Canada and the Caribbean, as required. The team you work on will be responsible for delivering complex projects by managing architects and engineers while working with Avia NG’s technical team. This includes application of design, engineering, and construction experience to develop and prepare figures, design drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, technical reports, and presentations.

You will administer construction contracts with general contractors including change orders, requests for information, and payment certifications. This also includes supporting clients through their procurement processes for major capital projects, including pre-qualifications, RFP's, contractor evaluations, tenders, and contract negotiations.

You will visit construction sites to assess quality and progress of work, review and observe material and equipment testing inspections, establish deficiencies, conduct and supervise final inspections, ensure warranty inspections are performed and initiate action to correct, and ensure work is completed per contracts. It is anticipated that travel to airports will be required, either by car when appropriate, or by air travel. Opportunities for extended construction supervision roles on sites in the Caribbean or across Canada may be available.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Coordination: Serve as a liaison between design teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of engineering projects. Assist in the preparation, review, and monitoring of project plans, schedules, and budgets. Coordinate site investigations, technical assessments, and other engineering-related activities. Ensure technical specifications, requirements, and construction plans align with project objectives. Address any technical issues that arise during the project lifecycle by working closely with engineers and contractors.
  • Design Interface Management: Facilitate the exchange of information between owners, stakeholders, design teams, engineers, and contractors. Ensure design deliverables meet project requirements and are compliant with regulations and standards. Monitor the progress of design work, ensuring that milestones and deadlines are met. Assist in the coordination of design modifications or changes throughout the project, ensuring timely updates to all stakeholders.
  • Project Support: Provide administrative and logistical support for the project team, including preparing documentation, reports, and meeting minutes or summaries. Maintain a comprehensive project schedule and provide regular updates on project progress. Track and manage project documentation, ensuring compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements. Organize project meetings, workshops, and coordination sessions, ensuring timely follow-up on action items.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with the Project Manager and senior technical staff to ensure the project remains on schedule and within budget. Ensure clear communication between all internal and external stakeholders, providing updates on design, scheduling, and technical issues. Manage and resolve any coordination challenges between design, engineering, and construction teams.

What do we need from you?

Our best fit for this role would be a self-starter who has a background or education in building design or project engineering. Experience with complex facilities or strict operational conditions is considered an asset.

Additional skills and experience we are seeking:

  • 2-5 years of experience in the consulting and/or construction industry with a focus on building design and/or construction
  • Familiarity with construction project management processes and methodology
  • Demonstrated experience in building design and/or construction with an education in a relevant professional discipline
  • Strong communication and report writing skills and ability to prioritize/manage multiple project timelines.
  • Strong attention to detail, effective communicator, good presentation skills and able to present complex technical topics clearly to the client.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite of programs (MS Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with design software (e.g. Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, ArcGIS etc.) or construction software (e.g. Procore, Primavera, MS Project) is an asset but not a requirement.
  • Valid Canadian Driver’s license.
  • Willing and able to travel within Canada, as required for site visits and inspections.
