Director, Engineering in Toronto

At AdRise, we build cutting-edge advertising capabilities for Tubi and across the Fox portfolio of brands. We are enhancing the in-house ad tech stack by optimizing server-side delivery, building ML-driven targeting systems, and enabling content-personalized ad experiences. We are creating a smarter, more dynamic ad tech ecosystem.

AdRise is looking for a Director of Engineering to lead Rainmaker, our Ad Server engineering domain responsible for core systems that govern advertising across our streaming ecosystem. This role requires strong engineering judgment and organizational leadership. You will set direction for the domain, establish a high bar for quality and operational rigor, and build a healthy organization that can scale with the business.

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the Rainmaker Ad Server engineering team, setting clear technical direction and execution standards.
• Own the engineering strategy and roadmap for ad serving capabilities.
• Partner with Product, Data Science, ML, and adjacent engineering teams to translate business goals into durable technical investments.
• Drive the architecture and evolution of distributed systems that power ad decisioning and serving reliability at large scale.
• Build and develop a high-performing engineering organization by coaching managers and senior engineers.
• Establish a high bar for engineering excellence through strong design reviews and operational rigor.
• Improve team execution by strengthening planning, prioritization, and cross-functional alignment.
• Identify architectural bottlenecks and lead changes that increase velocity without compromising system correctness.
• Champion modernization through platform simplification and performance optimization.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• 5+ years of engineering leadership experience.
• Strong technical depth in low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems.
• Experience leading teams responsible for business-critical production systems.
• Strong background with JVM-based backend systems, ideally Scala.
• Experience with core backend infrastructure such as Postgres, Redis, Kafka, and cloud-native operational environments.
• Demonstrated success partnering cross-functionally with Product, Data Science, and other engineering teams.
• Track record of building strong teams and mentoring senior engineers.
• Strong operational instincts and experience driving incident response.
• High ownership, sound judgment, and a pragmatic approach to balancing technical quality with business impact.

Experience in AdTech, including ad serving, targeting, auction systems, and campaign delivery is preferred. Familiarity with Kubernetes, Terraform, and related infrastructure in large-scale production environments is also beneficial.
